Coppell is an affluent community located in northwest Dallas County, a suburb of Dallas within the north area of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. A small portion of north Coppell is located in Denton County. The town borders Lewisville to the north, Carrollton to the east, Dallas and Irving to the south, and Grapevine to the west. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is located to the south and a portion of the airport property is within the city limits.
There are no major thoroughfares within Coppell but the town is adjacent to SH 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway on the north and west and I-635/LBJ Freeway on the south, with SH 161/President George Bush Turnpike (2 miles) and I-35E/ Stemmons Freeway (3 miles) to the east.
Commercial development has been extensive over the past decade along the Freeport Parkway corridor with several national headquarters including CiCi's Pizza and The Container Store as well as numerous shipping and distribution facilities including Lucent, Samsung, and Mohawk Industries.

Coppell was incorporated in 1955. In 1970 it registered 1,728 residents and quickly experienced massive growth after the opening of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. By 1980 the population had grown to 3,826 residents and that figure continued to rise to 16,881 in 1990, 35,958 in 2000, and in 2010 the population was 38,659.
